Understanding Different Culture

Recently I’ve read about Japanese language behavior. It’s very interesting. Even I have a lot of experience in speaking English with the people from other countries and have traveled a lot, I hadn’t noticed many of them before.

According to the book, Japanese people tend to give responses at very frequent intervals as we listen to other people. The response might sound like agreement but not always. It’s just to make the conversation go smoothly. We, Japanese know it. But it sometimes annoys non-Japanese. On the other hand, Japanese people worry that the other person is not listening to them when they don’t get frequent responses. This was very interesting. It explained why I sometimes wondered whether the other person is listening to me when I was talking with non-Japanese.

This is only an example. It’s not only interesting to know about language behavior difference among different culture but also useful to communicate with the people from different cultural background.

Mt. Fuji was beautiful this morning. I tried to take a picture by my IXY 200. …needless to say it’s not good quality but hope you recognize Mt. Fuji!

最近日本人の言語行動について読んでいる。すごくためになる感じ。日常生活・仕事でいつも英語を話したり、海外にも頻繁に行ったりしている私も　知らなかったことがたくさんあった。

その本によれば日本人はすごく頻繁に相槌を打つ。つまり他の国の人よりもっと頻繁にということ。それはただ会話をスムーズに進めるためのもので私たち日本人にとってはごく普通なことだ。でもこれがときどき日本人じゃない人たちには理解できなくてうざいと思われるらしい。　しかも日本人の頻繁なあいづちは話していることに対する同意だと印象を与えるらしい。言われてみればそうかもしれないけど。逆に日本人は頻繁にあいづちを打ってもらわないと自分の話を聞いてもらえてるのか不安になるらしい。なるほど　私にも身に覚えが…。

これはほんの一つの例なんだけど　言語行動を理解することは自分とは違う文化を持つ国の人々とコミュニケートするときにほんと大切なんだなーと思う。

ところで今朝は富士山がきれいに見えた。IXY２００でがんばって撮影。あまりいい画質でないことはいうまでもない。
