Karuizawa

I spent two days with a friend in Karuizawa, Nagano and Gumma prefecture. It took only 70 minutes from Tokyo by bullet train (shinkansen). On the way, I saw the Kanto Plain surrounded by mountains. It looked lovely and familiar for me. I grew up in part of the Kanto Plain.

Img_3934  We arrived at Karuizawa at noon yesterday. The fist thing we’d planned was to go to the famous bakery, Asanoya to have lunch. There were many many shops and restaurants on the main streets. And a lot of people there, indeed! It was almost like Takeshita-dori in Harajuku. I bought a baguette and garlic butter at Asanoya and ate it outside. When I broke the baguette, I was surprised at the feeling my fingers got. Outside of the baguette was very crispy and the inside was very very soft. This is a typical expression when one say about good baguette but I’d Img_3945never really felt it before. I don’t remember whether I tried it when I went to Paris. Maybe I focused on croissants too much 😉 Anyways, the baguette was excellent! (The picture is the baguette just before we finished it.) Today we went to Asanoya again to take it back to Tokyo. I bought whole wheat bread which was still warm. I couldn’t wait to go back to Tokyo. I ate immediately after I came out the bakery 😉 Yummy again.(Asanoya has a branch in Yotsuya, Tokyo!)

There are a lot of other foods we wanted to try in Karuizawa. But Img_3940capacity of tummy is limited though we did our best 😉 Rare cheese soft ice at Atelier de Fromage and a hot dog at Chozume-ya was yummy!

Though we had been thinking of spending some time in the nature, we decided to change the plan. Shops on the main streets and outlet shopping mall looks too nice to miss even though they were unbelievably busy.

We stayed at hotel in Kita-Karuizawa (north Karuizawa). The Img_3980_1Hotel Karuizawa 1130 was huge with good facilities. The room we stayed was large and even had a small kitchen. Hot springs was comfortable with Finnish sauna (they said so and the temperature was less than 80 degrees, which I know Finnish sauna temperature). They also had a pool and I went there this morning. No one else was there and I felt superb!

I didn’t forget to see some nature from the hotel and bus we took between Karuizawa station to the hotel. From the roof of the hotel, we could see beautiful Mt. Asama (2568m, an active Img_4000volcano) and other mountains. Still some snow left on the mountains and it made me missed skiing!

We had excellent time though I wish we had had more time! I have to go there again : )
