After the long long dark and cold winter, I feel spring has finally arrived to Helsinki. Even though it's still cold for me, it's definitely not winter. The day light saving time started last Sunday. Temperature went up to plus five degrees today, sun was shining and it was still pretty blight outside when I left the office. The dark and cold winter made me feel quite lazy. It was dark when went to work and it was dark again when I came home even though it was 8 in the morning and it was 4 in the evening. Even after having coffee with a friend and it was still 6 in the evening when we headed to home, I felt it's very late and I had to hurry to go home to sleep. Then I looked at my mobile to check the time and found out it wasn't that late. If I had been in Tokyo, it would have been quite early evening 😉 It was quite confusing. But when I realized the day started getting longer, I started feeling more active. It, however, is also confusing now. I don't feel it's evening when I'm out in the evening now : ) I remember I felt so strange last summer, my first summer as a resident in Finland.

During the dark and cold winter, I went to Lapland first time. I crossed the arctic circle first time. My mum came to Finland first time. And she went to Lapland and crossed the arctic circle first time : ) It was exciting. Actually, my mum came with her three friends from the junior high. They were all excited about being in Finland! We wanted to see the northern light and waited for it for long time in the extremely cold weather, -27 degrees. But we couldn't see it… Still, it was fun to visit Rovaniemi where Santa Clause lives. We were blessed with fine weather. It was cold indeed but we enjoyed the blue sky, beautiful sunshine and white snow. 暗くて寒い長い長い冬がようやく終わりを告げそうたようだ。ヘルシンキにも春が訪れた気配。日本人的にはまだまだ寒い気温だけれど、もう冬でないことは間違いない。先週の日曜日から夏時間（夏というか英語では The day light saving time）が始まった。気温も今日はプラス5℃まで上がった。太陽もまぶしかったし、私がオフィスを出たときも外はまだまだ明るかった（6時ごろ）。寒くて暗い冬の間はなにもやる気が起きなかった。会社に行くときも帰るときも真っ暗だった。ちなみに時間は朝の8時とか、夕方の4時とかだ。会社の後に友達と会って家に向かうとき　それがまだ6時だったりしてもなんだかもうすごく遅くて急いで家に帰って寝なくちゃと思うくらいだった。かなり混乱する。夕方6時は全然遅い時間じゃないし、東京にいたときだったらどちらかといえばまだ早いという感じだったのに。でもだいぶ日が長くなってきたと感じられるころになるとなんだかとても気分が盛り上がってきた。アクティブになる自分に気づいた。でも日が長いのもまたまた混乱するのだった。夜外出していてもまだまだ日中のような錯覚に陥る。去年フィンランドで暮らし始めて初めての夏もかなり感覚が変になったのを思い出す。

そんな暗くて寒い冬の間に生まれて初めてラップランドに行ってきた。生まれて初めて北極圏をまたいだ。私の母が初めてフィンランドにやってきた。そして母もまた初めてのラップランド、そして初めて北極圏をまたいだ。とても盛り上がるイベントだった。母は中学時代の友人3人とやってきて、私も含めて5人でラップランドに行った。一番の目的はオーロラ鑑賞。暗くて寒い（-27℃）夜、長いこと外で待っていたけれど結局一度もオーロラは見られなかった。それでもサンタクロースが住む街、ロバニエミはとても楽しかった。何よりも天候に恵まれ、寒くはあったが、まぶしい太陽の光と青い空、そして白い雪。詳細は写真にて　http://smileyumi.typepad.com/photos/200902_rovaniemi/
