We had a lovely day in Antwerp last Friday. The cupcakes I wrote about previously was one of them and there were also other fun and interesting stuff. One of the most interesting things about Antwerp was the origin of the name "Antwerp". A friend of mine who had a guidebook told me the folklore about "Antwerp" and the following is the same story written in the wikipedia.
According to folklore, and as celebrated by the statue in front of the town hall, the city got its name from a legend involving a mythical giant called Antigoon who lived near the river Scheldt. He exacted a toll from those crossing the river, and for those who refused, he severed one of their hands and threw it into the river Scheldt. Eventually, the giant was slain by a young hero named Brabo, who cut off the giant's own hand and flung it into the river. Hence the name Antwerpen, from Dutchhand werpen—akin to Old English hand and wearpan (= to throw), which has changed to today's warp.
The above photo is the statue in front of the town hall. The young hero is throwing away the cut hands and the giant without a hand is laying down at the bottom. I hadn't seen anything like this statue before.
However, there seems to be other theories which you can find in the wikipedia.

とても楽しかったアントワープ訪問。カップケーキだけじゃなくてほかにも楽しくて興味深いことがたくさんあった。まずはアントワープという名前の由来・・・ガイドブックを読んでいた友達が見つけた情報にはびっくり。同じ由来を以下Wikipediaから抜粋。
言い伝えによれば、街の名称はスヘルデ川沿いに住む神話上の巨人アンティゴヌスと英雄ブラボーの伝説に由来しており、市庁舎前の「ブラボーの噴水」に、この伝説にちなんだ像が建てられている。アンティゴヌスはスヘルデ川を渡ろうとする者に通行料を要求し、それに応じなかった者の片手を切り落として河へ放り捨てたとされる。しかし、若き英雄ブラボーがついにアンティゴヌスを退治し、その手を切り落として河へ投げた。このことが、「Antwerpen」（オランダ語で「手を投げる」の意、古英語では「hand」「wearpan (= to throw)」）という名称の由来となった。
上の写真がそのアントワープ市庁舎前にある銅像。こんな銅像ほかで見たことないかも。ちょっとリアル。切り取った手を投げようとしている若き英雄と手を切り取られた巨人が下のほうに横たわっているのだ・・・
でもそれがほんとの由来かどうかは定かでないようでほかにもいろんな説があったりするようだ。詳しくはWikipediaで。
