It's getting much warmer in Helsinki! I can go out without a winter coat. What a relief?! Today, I went to the Brasserie Kämp for Sunday Brunch. Kämp is the most prestigious hotel in Finland and Madonna stayed here when she came to Helsinki a couple of years ago. Looking at the menu of the Sunday Brunch, I have been looking forward to today since I agreed with a friend to come there!

だいぶ暖かくなってきたヘルシンキ。今日は冬のコートを着なくても大丈夫。ヘルシンキ一番の目抜き通りエスプラナーデ通り（上の写真）を歩いて、ホテルKämpへ。Kämpはフィンランドの最高級ホテル、今日はここのブラッセリーでサンデーブランチ。3週間前から予約してやる気満々。メニューはこんな感じ。何種類もあるフレッシュサラダ、フィンランド名物のニシンの酢漬け、ローストラム、さくさくのクロワッサン、とっても濃厚なモッツァレーラチーズ、前菜のサーモン、メインのサーモン、レバーのパテ、スクランブルエッグ、スープ（たぶん今日のスープはカリフラワーとキャロットのポタージュ）、それにパンケーキとメイプルシロップ（最高！）、そしていろんな種類のデザート！

We liked they had several kinds of salad, Paté spiced with green pepper, char grilled salmon as one of the appetizers, slightly-smoked salmon as one of the main dishes, roasted lamb, very tasty mozzarella, pancakes with maple syrup!!!…etc (every dishes, anyways). And we are extremely impressed by the crispy croissants and choices of the gorgeous dessert! They even had my favourite cupcakes from Kanniston leipomo (Déjà vu!!!)which I just wrote about a couple of days ago. So, this time I tasted both strawberry and chocolate ones : ) Both were lovely! I was simply enjoying eating those lovely dishes and didn't take many pictures. You have to go there if you would like to see how the Sunday buffet is like! It's a bit pricey and good for special occasions!

デザートの中にはなんと、おとといKannistonleipomoで食べてお気に入りになったあのカップケーキ。今日は友達と半分こでストロベリーとチョコレートの両方を味見。ビュッフェだから半分こでなくてもよかったけど、もうこの時点で結構おなかいっぱい（笑　料理の写真はあまり撮らず、魅力的に並んでいたデザートの写真のみ。後はご想像で！

久しぶりに食べすぎ・・・でも食べ過ぎたくなるくらいおいしいサンデーブランチ。ちょっと豪華なブランチを食べたい気分のときにお薦め！

 快晴の金曜日。気温はまだ10℃を少し上回った程度だが　気分はとても春、あるいはもう初夏の気分（笑　のヘルシンキ。カフェやパブのテラスは大賑わい。今週も1週間がんばって働いたので自分のご褒美、なにかプチおいしいものが食べたい・・・たとえば、カップケーキとか・・・

TGIF! It was a sunny Friday though wind was still chilly. I wanted to indulge myself as a reward for working another week.

A reward… something which makes me happy… maybe a cupcake?

I remembered my favorite Kanniston Leipomo recently started selling the original cupcakes as well as many other small shops and supermarkets in Finland. (Cupcake boom has finally arrived in Finland!!!)

遅ればせながら、最近ようやくフィンランドにもカップケーキブーム上陸。パン屋といえばスーパーのパン売り場というのが相場のフィンランド。そんな中数少ないほんとのパン屋、そして私がもっとも信頼している店、Kanniston Leipomo の店頭にも最近カップケーキがお目見え。チョイスはストロベリーかチョコレート。迷わずストロベリー。

Between, a strawberry cupcake and a chocolate cupcake, I chose strawberry one which I loved : ) Cupcake was absolutely right choice for indulging myself. The lovely strawberry cream with strawberry chips and the moist cake which reminded me of madeleine and financier made smile! Kannisto is definitely the best bakery in Finland, in my opinion!

おいし～い！このストロベリーのクリーム、ほんとのストロベリーの細かい粒も入っていて、果汁感たっぷり。そして下のスポンジの部分は、おいしい店のマドレーヌのようなしっとり感。（そういえばマドレーヌやフィナンシェもフィンランドでは見かけない、参考まで）　なにもなくてもhappyな気分の金曜のアフター5。太陽の光がまぶしくい店の前のテーブル席（１つしかない!）でまったりしながら素敵なカップケーキと(普通の)コーヒーでさらにHappy! TGIF!

Reputation of Finnish cuisine…The Italian prime minister Berlusconi claimed that "I've been to Finland and I had to endure the Finnish diet so I am in a position to make a comparison." And French President, Jacques Chirac claimed that "After Finland, [Britain is] the country with the worst food.

However, there are more and more restaurants which serves tasty dishes in Finland nowadays though I have to say there is no point of comparing it to Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, even to London which actually has great restaurants, and so on.

Last evening, I had a chance to dine at one of the Michelin-starred restaurants, Chez Dominique, in Helsinki. Even though we had six-course menu, there were more dishes! It started with Greetings from the kitchen (several creative petite snacks) and finished with appetizer dessert, main dessert and a lot of petit confiserie. That is why there are more than six pictures and there were more which I didn't take pictures of. (Photos were out of focus taken by the smart phone as it didn't feel appropriate to take photos by camera! )

フィンランドといえば、残念ながらグルメで有名な国ではない。フランスのシラク大統領から｢フィンランドの料理はイギリスと同様にまずい｣と言われ、イタリアのベルルスコーニ首相からも｢フィンランドでは食べるものがなくて、ダイエットしなければならなかった｣と言われたくらい。もちろん東京やパリ、香港や、いまやグルメなお店が増えたロンドンとは比べ物にならないけれど、フィンランドにもおいしいお店が増えてきた。ミシュランの星つきのレストランも昨年には５つになり、昨日はその１つ、もっとも星の多い（といっても２つだけど）シェ・ドミニクでおいしいディナーをいただいた。値段も一流なこのお店、ぐるっぽんでクーポンを買っ たので半額。そんな素敵なお店とぐるっぽんというのがミスマッチではあるけれど、またとない機会！飛びついた次第。 トップの写真は昨日の料理の中で一番おいしいと思ったビーフ。普段は肉は食べないけれどスペシャルオケージョン。ベジタリアンとかローフードとかはすっかり忘れて堪能（笑。６品のコースだったが、最初の前菜（最初の　というのは前菜も一品だけじゃなかったから）の前にキッチンからのgreetingsという名でクリエイティブなプチスナックのようなものも何品か出て、もはや下の写真のどこからがほんとの前菜だったかは不明（笑。さらにデザートも、デザートの前菜、デザート、そのあとの小菓子もなんだか小菓子というよりは大量。いやはや。説明するのもなんなので　（というか全部は覚えてないので）写真をご覧くださいませ。カメラでの撮影はちょっと場違いという感じだったので、スマホでの撮影。よってちょっとピンボケ気味。ご容赦くださいませ。

ちなみにこれ全部で一人分。そのほかに写真を撮れなかったキッチンからのgreetingsの一部と小菓子もあり・・

シェフが日本料理の影響をだいぶ受けているようで味噌汁とか、わさびとか、海草とか抹茶とか、いろいろ日本のものがちりばめられたコース。

左上はプチ味噌汁。右上は甘いものではなく形はシュークリームやマドレーヌでも中にチーズとか入っているキッチンからのgreetingsの一部。

確かこの右上の写真はフォアグラでさらにフォアグラのパルメザン風なものをかけてくれた。

気がつけばミシュラン星つきの店５つ中、４つ目の制覇。せっかくだから５つ目も近々トライしてみようかと。ちなみにその５店とはDemo, Luomo, Postres, Olo、そしてこのChez Dominique. 次は5店目Luomoへ : )

There are five Michelin-starred restaurants, Demo, Luomo, Postres, Olo and Chez Dominizue, in Helsinki and I have been to four of them by now. So, isn't it no surprise that I would like to go to Luomo, only one which I haven't been yet, next time?

 

 

A cafe newly opened in front of our yoga studio on Fredrikinkatu caught my eyes because of the name, Kawa cafe! "kawa" means "river" in Japanese. I saw it first time when I was walking with a Japanese friend. We were wondering if it means something in Finnish. A Finnish friend told me it didn't mean anything but it seems the owner is half Japanese and her family name has something to do with "Kawa".

We went there after lovely yoga class this evening and loved the cafe. They have lovely sandwiches, salad, soup, sweets and gorgeous smoothies! All looked fresh and nice. Some of them are organic. Yoga friend's recommendation was green smoothie. And I will definitely try it next time. Today, I had panini with sun-dried tomatoes, avocado and mozzarella cheese and some Chinese tea. Interior of the cafe is nicely done with lovely white color. This is a-must-to-check-out cafe now in Helsinki, especially if you are looking for something healthy and yummy!

われわれのヨガスタジオの前に新しくオープンした "Kawa"　カフェ。もちろん日本人の私の目を引きました。最初に見つけたのは日本人の友達と歩いていたとき。"kawa" はフィンランド語でなんか意味があるのだろうか、それとも日本語の川からとってつけたモダンな店なのか・・・と話していたのですが、フィンランド人のヨガ友によるとフィンランド語では特に意味がなく、どうやらフィンランド人と日本人のハーフだと思われるオーナーの苗字と関係しているようだという話。なるほど・・・

そんな Kawa cafe,　今日のヨガ教室の帰りに行ってみました。Lovely! サラダ、スープ、サンドイッチ、スィーツ、スムーズ。フレッシュでおししそうなものばかり！今日はドライトマト、アボカド、モッツアレラチーズのパニーニとプーアール茶をいただきました。ヨガ友のお薦めはグリーンスムージー。次回はぜひトライしなくては。

Kawa cafe はKamppiから歩いてすぐ、Fredrikinkatuにあります。（有名な岩の教会の近くです。）白を基調にしたインテリが素敵なこのカフェ、ヘルシンキでぜひチェックしてみて欲しいお店です。特にヘルシー志向の人にお薦め。そうでなくても楽しめますが : ) ちなみに一番上の写真はあまりヘルシーという感じではないかも・・・（笑

昨日のヘルシンキは快晴。青い空と大地に積もった白い雪のコントラストがとてもきれい。サングラスは忘れたけれど、日焼け止めクリームを塗って散歩に出かけました。気温は-2度くらい。それでももう春が来るんだなという気分です。なにもかもがキラキラに見えて、ヘルシンキってこんなに素敵なところだっけと思うほど（笑　たぶん暗い冬の後には毎年思っているんだと思いますが、また冬が来るとそんなことを忘れちゃうんですね、きっと。ちなみに下の写真は凍った海の上を犬と一緒に散歩しているカップルです。凍った海と空以外なにもないとても広々とした風景は絶景でした。

Yesterday, we had a beautiful weather. Blue sky and white snow on the ground and the sea are lovely! I forgot to take sunglasses but didn't forget to put sunscreen on the face. Even though it was -2degrees, I felt spring was almost there. Everything was shiny. The couple with the dog in the picture was walking on the frozen sea.

さてそんな素敵な日の散歩コースの休憩は凍った海にかかった橋を渡ったところにある島、Uunisaariのカフェ。この島冬は橋を渡って行けますが、夏になるとボートが通行するので橋は取り去られてしまいます。そして島までは陸地から専用のボートで。橋は無料ですが、ボートは有料。なんだか変な感じです。下の写真がその橋、そしてその先にあるのがカフェのある建物。そこにはカフェだけではなくてレストランもあって、その隣の建物はサウナ。パーティーなどに使われるようです。

On such a beautiful day, a friend and I walked to the island, Uunisaari. In winter, there is a bridge to walk there but in summer, you have to take a boat as they took off the bridge for many boats passing through. The building over the bridge in the picture is the one which has  cafe and restaurant. And the other building is sauna.

そんなカフェでいただいたのは　私の大好物のプッラ（フィンランドで甘いパンの総称です。だいたいシナモンとかカルダモンとか入ってます。日本だったら菓子パンかな？）voisilmapulla。voi はバター、silmaは目、バターでできた目が真ん中についているプッラです。実はバターだけじゃなくてそこにはお砂糖がまぶしてあるのでとても魅力的。しかも昨日は焼きたてのプッラ。もちろんコーヒーと一緒にいただきました。smile : )　散歩をしたら　プッラとコーヒーでブレイク、それが私と友達の決まりのようになっています。このUunisaariはまたまたKaivopuisto, Cafe Ursula などがある場所からすぐ近くです。http://www.uunisaari.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3&Itemid=4&lang=fi (フィンランド語とロシア語のWebページしかありません。）

The log house behind the gate was Finnish restaurant, Savotta. We wondered if this was the right place to enter. But it was the right entrance to the dining room in the basement. We were greeted by super cheerful man in a costume (I suppose it was old Finnish country style clothes).

扉の奥に見える木の掘っ立て小屋みたいなのがフィンランドレストラン、Savotta。看板は出てるけどほんとにここでいいの、と思いながら中に入ってみると、ディズニーランド張りに元気で明るいお兄さんが地下にあるテーブルに案内してくれた。（お兄さんとかお姉さんとかっていう言葉をほんとの兄弟以外に使うのはあまり好まないけど、あのウェイターにはお兄さんという言葉がぴったり（笑）

There were authentic Finnish dishes in the menu and the waiter told us their recommendation were fish soup and their new menu, bear meat ball when he brought the petite appetizer.

メニューはオーセンティックなフィンランド料理。お店のお薦めは魚のスープと新メニュー、熊肉のミートボール。席につくとミニ前菜が出される。

Half following his recommendation, we ordered Finnish fish soup which was actually salmon soup and Vendace fish à la  floaters’ “Saihu” boat. Soup was served in an interesting way, (look at the photo below) and the fried vendace was served with a lot of mash potatoes. They were tasty though we were a bit tired of the fried fish (it wasn't small amount and keep eating fried food made us too full to feel great).

熊の肉にはあまり食指が動かなかったわれわれ。お薦めの魚のスープとシロマスのフライをオーダー。スープのプレゼンテーションはなかなか（笑　シロマスはたっぷりのマッシュポテトと一緒に登場。どちらもおいしくいただきました。でも　シロマスのフライはあんなにいっぱいいらないかも。食べてるうちにしつこくなってきた。もともと揚げ物にそんなに強いほうじゃないからかもしれないけど　もうたくさん・・・

Dining experience at Savotta was nice especially for the authentic Finnish setting. This is a good restaurant to remember when you have visitors from other countries. In fact, I went there with a friend visiting here from Singapore. But I have to say we were not happy with the pricey bottle of water, 8€!

食事もおいしく雰囲気がとりわけ特別なこのレストラン、特にフィンランド国外から友達が来たときにお薦めです。（または観光で来ているみなさん！）私もシンガポールから来ていた友達を連れていきました。でも1.5ℓボトルの水が8€というのはどういうことなんでしょうか・・・？！

It's a hidden gem, the best cafe in Helsinki! Last Sunday when we went walking around Kaivopuisto, a friend showed me the lovely cafe though it was closed then. We agreed to come back there next Friday. And it was the Friday today! It closes at 17:00 on weekdays and we wanted to get there at 16:00 after work. Though it wasn't pleasant to walk on the icy and wet streets, it was worth going there. Interior and atmosphere of the cafe was super lovely. As soon as we entered the cafe, we said "Wow! This is lovely!" A piece of cake was quite big and we decided to share it. The chocolate banana cake was airy and very tasty! We liked it a lot. And the coffee was also good : ) We learnt they have different kinds of lovely cakes in the selection from the kind cafe staff though there were only chocolate cake and banana chocolate cake available when we go there. They have a lovely counter table by the window. There are cars always parking on the street in front of the shop, unfortunately. But over it, there is a ocean. Even though it's not that well-known located between the famous cafes, Ursula and Carusel, I think this is the best cafe I have ever visited in Helsinki. 今日はとても素敵なカフェに行きました。かもめ食堂で有名なUrsulaと、もうひとつ同じく海に面して有名なCaruselの間の海から少し離れた通りにあるこのカフェ、そんなにうわさになるようなカフェではないけれど、実はこのカフェ、掘り出し物。ほんとに素敵でした。平日の営業時間は5時まで。今日は仕事をがんばって早めに終えて急いでカフェに向かいました。とけた雪が固まってツルツルになっている道を急いで歩いて4時ごろに到着。お店に入ると・・・　Wow! インテリアも雰囲気もとても素敵。一瞬にしてお気に入りのカフェに。そしてバナナチョコレートケーキをいただいてもっとお気に入りに。一切れが大きかったので友達と半分ずつ。シフォンケーキのような軽さと上品な味。フィンランドで今までこんな感じのケーキ食べたことのないような…　コーヒーも今日はもうチョコレートケーキとバナナチョコレートケーキしか残っていなかったけれど、お店の人に聞いてみるともっといろいろな種類のケーキがあるとのこと。次回が楽しみ！ということでまた来週末、同じ友達と行くことに決めました　;-)　ところでこのカフェ、窓に向かってカウンターになっている席があります。そこからのビュー、残念ながら道にいつも車が止まっているのですが、その先には海が・・・このあたりはポピュラーなお散歩コースなので、歩いたり走ったりしてる人をながめながらお茶をするのもなかなか楽しいかと・・・ケーキの種類などは　お店のWeg page で見てくださいませ。http://www.sokerileipuri.fi/

 

 

It's Shrove Tuesday today. I went to cafe, Cafe&Eepos, to try their laskiaispulla recommended by a friend. I really wanted to try it before the season ends (officially it's today, I think). It was an interesting cafe with nice book shelves with full of books. But it could be much cuter with a bit of effort. Laskiaispulla was pretty good and I appreciate friend's recommendation! It always helps : )

So this season, I tried laskiaispulla from two different shop/cafe in addition to the one from our office cafe. I also checked some other cafes for the prices though I didn't eat it there. I think Kannistonleipomo and Cafe&Eepos both had good ones. And it was fun to compare the texture of the buns They were quite different though I liked both.

I didn't mention it in my previous post but filling of laskiaispulla is not only whipped cream. It's either combination of whipped cream and almond paste or whipped cream and jam. And I definitely like the one with jam! But I think you have to try them to find your favorite one : ) It's one of fun activities in winter 😉

Oh, let's not forget about the shocking fact about price. It was €2.6 at Kannistonleipomo, 3€ at Eepos and shockingly 4.8 € at Fazer cafe. I think I go to Fazer only for chocolate 😉

今日は告解の火曜日ということで わたくしの理解が正しければlaskiaispullaを食べられる最終日。友達のお薦め、cafe & Eeposに行ってみました。素敵な雰囲気の本棚や、ほかにも素敵な感じのパーツがたくさんあったものの、もうひとがんばりでとてもかわいいカフェになるのに・・・という気分にさせられるカフェでした。ある意味東京にあるカフェとは感じが違っているので異国情緒が感じられるとも言えますし、ある意味とてもフィンランド的なカフェです。

さて肝心のlaskiaispulla、これはgood! やっぱり友達からの評判は頼りになります。今年はほかで買う気がしなくて2回試したKannistonleipomoと同じくらいおいしかった。パンの部分の食感が2つの店でとても違っているのもおもしろかったです。ぜひ両方試してみるのをお薦めしますが・・・

ちなみに値段ですが、これは様々。Kannistonleipomo では2.6€ Eeposでは 3€、そしてびっくり かの有名なFazer cafeでは4.8€。Fazerではチョコレートを買うだけにしたいかと思います。味も値段を反映してるとは思えないので・・・

そして昨日のブログでは触れなかったのですが、このプッラの中に入っているのはホイップクリームだけではないのです。中身はホイップクリームとアーモンドペーストの組み合わせか、同じくホィップクリームとジャムの組み合わせ。私は断然ジャム派・・・ですが、皆様お好みで、試してみてくださいませ。

本日のヘルシンキの街はこんな感じ・・・今日もさらに雪が降りましたが、夕方には気温が＋1℃まで上昇。ビルの上から落ちてくる雪や氷の塊がとても危険なので雪降ろしののできてないところはこのように立ち入り禁止のサインが・・・このサインのあるところが多くて、道を歩くのがさらに大変に・・・　もう歩道が全然歩けないところもあります。今日は自分のアパートの入り口のところも立ち入り禁止なのかと思うような状態でした。
